First Time NLS Advocates

Amanda Blythe, Dr. Shannon Manley, Dr. Nicole Pierce, Jayla Carter, ETAMU.
Over 1/3 of the attendees at the March 2026 National Legislative Seminar were first time partic- ipants. Included in the group were 2 collegiate members from Beta Lambda Chapter, Texas. Amanda Blythe and Jayla Carter joined by their faculty sponsors, who are also members of the chapter, participated in NLS 2026 and took advantage of many of the opportunities afforded in D.C.
The group met with Alaura Ervin, education policy director
for the Senate Committee on
Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), received a guided tour of the Capitol, and explored many of the historic landmarks in the capital.
"The DKG Forum . . . showed me how important it is for future educators to stay involved, use their voice and take advantage of opportunities to learn outside
the classroom," reported Blythe.
Her colleague Jayla Carter added
that "NLS gave me the chance to connect with DKG members not only from Texas but from around the world [sic]."
These attendees and the other
"first timers" went away with a
new respect for meeting with
legislators and with both new skills and experiences to reinforce
their commitment to speaking up
for issues important to educators.
